Want to get up to speed fast with PowerShell? SharePoint MVPs Dan Holme and Gary Lapointe join forces to accelerate your learning curve in this one-of-a-kind workshop. By the end of three intensive and highly-practical sessions, you'll be working at full throttle, administering and automating SharePoint configuration and management.
Dan Holme starts the engine with his PowerShell Jump Start ssession. If you're new to PowerShell or new to using PowerShell with SharePoint, you'll discover just how easy it is to use Windows PowerShell – and you'll learn how to learn PowerShell. Dan will introduce the SharePoint object model and the cmdlets that allow you to build and report the logical structure of SharePoint web applications, site collections, and sites.
Then PowerShell uber-guru Gary Lapointe takes the wheel, guiding you through the concepts and skills you need to move from the Management Shell to remote management and scripting. You'll tackle conditional expressions, iteration, error trapping and more, and you'll apply what you learn to common SharePoint administrative tasks.
Finally, Gary steps on the gas with a session packed with real-world administrative challenges and the PowerShell solutions that make them disappear. When this journey comes to an end, you'll be screaming for more, and you'll be ready to take what you've learned back to your own SharePoint farm.
Throughout the day, you'll be producing useful scripts that can serve as the basis for your own SharePoint script library. You'll leave equipped with practical solutions and inspiration for the possibilities of automating SharePoint administration with Windows PowerShell.
Sessions (each session runs approximately 75 minutes):
Session 1: A Practical Jump Start to Administering SharePoint with Windows PowerShell
Windows PowerShell is the preferred tool for administering and automating SharePoint outside of Central Administration and only with PowerShell can you perform scripted configuration and certain tasks such as granular restore. So if you've been holding back on learning PowerShell, the time has come to tackle it. Join SharePoint MVP Dan Holme for a very practical, super-clear PowerShell jump start. You'll learn that you don't need to be a scripting guru to use and understand PowerShell and you'll learn how easy it is to manage SharePoint with PowerShell. The first session will:
- Jump-start your learning using Windows PowerShell in a SharePoint environment
- Help you master PowerShell fundamentals
- Show you how to create and report the logical structure of your SharePoint farm
- Set you up for scripting, automation, and advanced administration tasks covered in subsequent sessions
Session 2: Go Beyond the Management Shell with SharePoint and Windows PowerShell
Windows PowerShell is so much more than what you can run from the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell command line. To be an effective SharePoint administrator, you need to be able to automate common or complex tasks with scripts that are reusable, tolerant to errors, and sensitive to edge cases or unexpected conditions. In this session, you'll learn:
- Concepts and techniques that will set you on the course to becoming a scripting guru.
- About functions, conditional logic, iteration, and error handling techniques
- Learn to administer SharePoint from the comfort of your own desktop, using Windows PowerShell remoting.
- How to connect to your SharePoint environment, as well as best practices around session management.
Session 3: Automating SharePoint Administration with Windows PowerShell
Knowing the Windows PowerShell syntax is one thing – knowing the SharePoint API and architecture is another thing. And understanding how to use all that knowledge to automate common tasks is something else entirely. In this session, MVP Gary Lapointe builds on the previous two sessions with:
- Real-world examples of Windows PowerShell scripts that take the tediousness out of common, everyday SharePoint administrative tasks
- Advice to help you tackle feature and solution package management
- How–tos for creating reports of checked out files and effective user permissions
- Help restoring a list from a detached database.
