Join DevExpress Chief Scientist Mark Miller for a deeply immersive master class in creating great user interfaces (UI). You’ll learn essential information available nowhere else based on Mark’s seven years of research into measuring quality, presenting with clarity, and making a business case for great UI.
Sessions (each session runs approximately 75 minutes):
Session 1: Measuring Quality and Interactions
This session is designed to shatter the popular myth that UI is subjective. We’ll see that the quality of user interfaces can actually be quantified and a winner can be selected based on agreed-upon criteria. We’ll look at ways to measure physical and mental effort, irrespective of the physical device. We’ll find ways to "widen the path" for your users, and look at shortcomings in today’s controls. We’ll cover layered UIs, navigation, size and precision, discoverability, and predicted assistance.
Session 2: Presenting with Clarity
Learn how to present information effectively, as if you were a professional graphic artist. We’ll cover information relevance, proximity, information in parallel, emphasis, smallest effective difference, contrast, size, color, text, fonts, borders, and signal and noise. We’ll show how you can improve existing user interfaces. If you don’t have a graphic artist on your team, this session will show you how to fake it. If you do work with graphic artists, this session will show you how to communicate with them persuasively.
Session 3: Rethinking Existing UI and the Business Case for Great UI
Every platform comes with a set of UI guidelines. This session will focus on out-of-the-box ideas for improving UI, look at shortcomings in existing UI elements such as the scrollbar and the combo box, and discuss when it may be appropriate to invent your own UI. We’ll also present a compelling business case for great UI, and show how you can make a persuasive business case to the powers that be for investing in great UI.
