Many SharePoint administrators and developers dive head first into a challenge without knowing all of their options. Many of us listen to the requirements then immediately crack open Visual Studio and start off on our development journey. Unfortunately, anyone who has ever developed for SharePoint using Visual Studio knows that there is no such thing as “quick and easy.” For example, the ambitious developer will need a development environment and possibly even a test and staging environment and there are often complications that arise from the deployment of the code.

So how does a “veteran” developer approach these challenges? It’s important to understand that you can use a variety of tools for development in SharePoint 2010. For example, SharePoint Designer 2010 offers a wide range of tools that can meet basic to intermediate requirements. JQuery provides additional selectors and custom formatting that can override events and that can be dropped directly into SharePoint webparts—such as the Content Editor Web Part. You also can use a lesser known service application in SharePoint (Access Services) to build powerful and flexible business applications.

While the sessions for this eLearning event will not necessarily steer you away from Visual Studio, you’ll learn about options that can give you “quick wins” without having to write complex back-end code. Furthermore, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each approach and discuss the overall effort for each method. Veteran developer Ulysses Ludwig will present a series of sessions that help the SharePoint 2010 developer—whether novice, intermediate, or advanced—grasp the capabilities of these additional, and often misunderstood, tools. SharePoint 2010 Administrators can also benefit greatly from a better understanding of these tools to help manage and guide the developers working for them, and understand the options for enhancing SharePoint 2010 as a business platform.

Sessions (each session runs approximately 75 minutes):

Session 1: SharePoint Designer and ASPX Pages

Ever need to provide your users with a simple UI but you don't want the overhead, design patterns, and deployment requirements set forth by a Visual Studio Solution? In this session, we'll demonstrate how you can quickly crack the safe and develop simple applications using SharePoint Designer and SharePoint 2010. We'll demonstrate querystring filters, gridview controls, custom formatting, and direct SQL access in this session targeted at all of you no-code developers out there. After this session you’ll have the tools necessary to build pseudo .Net applications that allow users to navigate between pages that render data from SharePoint lists as well as SQL Server.

Session 2: JQuery and SharePoint

Over the past few years JQuery has become an important part of web development and has so much traction that it's currently included by Microsoft in a standard SharePoint install. In this session, we’ll demonstrate how developers can use JQuery to update an item's look and feel, override an item’s events, and inject additional functionality into an existing page. We'll also provide some tips and tricks to help developer better understand how JQuery works with respect to SharePoint.

Session 3: Access Services

In this session we’ll cover the ins and outs of Access Services and how you can utilize the application to provide application-like functionality all within the confines of a SharePoint site. We’ll develop a simple Access application that would normally require Visual Studio; then we’ll take that application and show it in action as part of Access Services. After this session you’ll have a better understanding about how you can utilize Access Services to host small disparate applications that might not have otherwise been stored in SharePoint. In addition, you’ll have a better understanding about the capabilities of Access Services applications and reporting capabilities.
